We are very excited about 2015, as we celebrate our 10th year as an association! We started off strong with a 10th Anniversary Member Meeting & Celebration on March 5th in Raleigh. The 80 industry professionals who braved the harsh weather to attend enjoyed a presentation on the history of the association which included the introductions of the Founding Members of the Carolinas Wireless Association. This event served as a proud moment for the Board not only because we had all of the Founding Members in attendance, but also because it was the first event in our ten year history that was free to all members.
Before I get into all of the exciting things to come in 2015, I wanted to take a look back at 2014 and highlight our accomplishments. The year started off with our 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, at the beautiful Pinehurst Resort. The event is so popular that we had 400 participants fill up two golf courses! Of those, 48 players were brave enough to take on Pinehurst’s most infamous course, Pinehurst # 2. Once again, we partnered up with Victory Junction and because of the generosity of all our active members and sponsors, we were able to donate $20K to this unbelievable organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of children with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses. Our donation will provide the kids with life changing camping experiences that are safe, fun, and exciting at no cost to the children’s families.
Another milestone achievement in 2014 was our growth to over 800 members. Although that sounds impressive, we need to continue to spread the word and talk about all the great things we are accomplishing so that idle members turn into active members.
We followed the tournament with an Educational Event in Charlotte in September, where we were very fortunate to have Jonathan Adelstein, President and CEO of PCIA, provide a glimpse into the future of wireless and the anticipated demand for capacity. We were also honored to have Kelley Dunne, President and CEO of Warriors 4 Wireless, present an overview of the organization and their work helping veterans transfer their military skills to civilian careers in the wireless industry. It was a great event with strong attendance that was even covered in the Charlotte paper! We wrapped up 2014 with our Annual Holiday Social at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh, NC in December. Attendees donated toys to Toys for Tots and enjoyed a fun evening networking with colleagues.
One of the biggest changes in 2014 was that the CWA joined New York and New Jersey as the first associations to officially join PCIA at the newly-created State Wireless Association level. As State Wireless Association members, we will work with PCIA to educate policy-makers and community leaders at the state and municipal levels about the wireless infrastructure industry and the many benefits of wireless broadband for community economic development, public safety and countless other applications. As one of the first associations to join, we will be able to work with PCIA to shape the newly created membership level.
Looking ahead, 2015 promises to be another exciting year! Plans are already in full swing for the 10th Annual Charity Golf Tournament scheduled on May 21, 2015 in Pinehurst! We are anticipating another sold-out event as 200 golfers have already registered and another 200 are expected. There will once again be a limited number of playing spots available on the famed Pinehurst # 2 Championship golf course so if you are up for the challenge, register as soon as possible.
We are also currently working on our fall Educational Event and the Holiday Networking Event so please check the website for future updates.
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, thank-you and we look forward to seeing all of you soon.
